Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park Bike Ride
Saturday was a beautiful day for a bike ride on the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park trail – thanks to “hurricane” Earl. My sons and I have been on other sections of the D & R Canal before. The other times we rode our bikes on stretches of the feeder canal along the Delaware River. This time we rode the 10 miles or so out-and-back on the main canal’s towpath from Griggstown to Princeton. This is own first time on a section of the main canal. The entire main canal runs east/west between New Brunswick and Trenton for about 34 miles. Griggstown is about midway between New Brunswick and Trenton on the canal. The feeder canal, which feeds water from the Delaware River to the main canal, runs north/south between Trenton and Frenchtown for about 32 miles along the Delaware.

This is one of two parking areas off Griggstown Causeway with access to Delaware & Raritan Canal Trail. If you are coming of Canal Road, the parking area are on the left just past the bridge over the canal and the before the one lane bridge onto County Road 533. The Griggstown Canoe and Kayak Rentals is at the corner of Canal Road and Griggstown Causeway where you can rent a canoe or kayak.
The trail is mostly hard packed dirt and cinder, very flat, and very kid friendly, although very young children may not find the entire 20 mile round trip very enjoyable. You don’t have to start at Griggstown. There are a few parking lots along the trail that you can use as your starting point.
